Chinese Dragon Dance (www.wongpeople.com)
The Chinese Lion Ritual or more commonly known by the general public as the lion dance is not really a dance routine. It is a set or sets of movements based on ancient Chinese Kung Fu techniques. These ancient techniques internal and external, hard and soft are developed through many years of practice. When these techniques reach their maturity level only then they are ready to be used with the Chinese lion. The Chinese lion costume itself contains no special or magical powers. The power to drive away any evil is directly related to the skill level of the lion player. If the lion players kung fu skill is good then the lion will be strong enough to dive away evil and bring good luck, on the other hand if the lion players kung fu skill is lacking or weak then the lion will not have the power to drive away evil, in that case it is just merely a meaningless colorful dance. |

Dhol - Indian Drum. (www.dholimastana.com)
The dhol drum dates back to the 15th century. Dhol was a popular musical instrument in both formal and informal dance performances for decades. Dhol players were once sought-after individuals for occasions of celebrations, such as weddings in India. Starting with the 1980s, the introduction of electronic devices such as tape recorder led to a decline in their importance. Though formal Bhangra performances still involve traditional dhol, and dhol music still figures in the studio recordings of present day Raas/Garba and Bhangra music artists. Dhol is popular not only in North and West India and Pakistan, but is much-loved throughout India and the United Kingdom. |

Lambardi (www.indiaculturalcenter.org). Indian Folk dance
The Lambadi Gypsy women of Andhra Pradesh, India have their own unique dance form punctuated by gaudy costumes and slow movements. The Lambadi women wear mirror-speckled headdresses and skirts and cover their arms with broad, white bone bracelets. This social dance is imbued with impassioned grace and lyricism and is less vigorous than that of Gypsies in other parts of the world. The striking beauty of the lambadi dancers lies in the subtle sensuality of the performer, This is among one of the few forms of dance, which is fully monopolized by women and gives importance to expressions too. |

Indian Classical Dance. (www.deepikagupta.com)
Bharatanatyam is one of the oldest dance forms of India. It was nurtured in the temples & courts of Southern India since ancient times. Later it was codified & documented as a performing art in the 19th century. Bharatanatyam has its origin in the Natya Shastra, an ancient treatise on the performing arts, & is said to have been written 2000 years ago by Bharata Muni. It was the first book which explained the origin of the art which gave intricate details about this dance form. The general interpretation for the name is Bha (Bhav - expressions) + Ra (Raaga - melody) + Ta (Tala - rhythm) + Natyam (Dance) = BHARATANATYAM. |
